DATA IDENTIFICATION

Name
Total official development assistance grants from all donors that focus on poverty reduction as a share of the recipient country’s gross national income
Indicator purpose

The purpose of this indicator is to measure the total official development assistance grants from all donors that focus on poverty reduction as a share of the recipient country’s gross national income to assess progress towards achieving SDG 1.a, ‘Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions’. This indicator provides essential data on poverty reduction through development assistance, which is critical for understanding the effectiveness and impact of international aid efforts on reducing poverty in recipient countries. By monitoring this indicator, policymakers, stakeholders, and organizations can make informed decisions to promote sustainable development and address challenges such as the effectiveness of development assistance in poverty reduction, the allocation and targeting of aid resources, and the impact of aid on recipient countries' gross national income. This indicator helps to ensure that relevant populations in low-income countries or regions are included in efforts to achieve poverty reduction, thereby contributing to the overall objective of sustainable, inclusive, and equitable growth.

Abstract

This indicator measures the total official development assistance (ODA) grants from all donors focusing on poverty reduction as a share of the recipient country’s gross national income (GNI), tracking progress towards SDG 1.a: “Ensure significant mobilization of resources from various sources, including enhanced development cooperation, to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, especially least developed countries, to implement programs and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions.” It provides crucial data on poverty reduction through development assistance, helping to understand international aid's impact on poverty reduction and promoting sustainable development in low-income countries.

The data for this indicator is collected through administrative reports and calculated by summing bilateral ODA grants by donor focusing on poverty reduction as a share of the donor country’s GNI, and the total ODA grants from all donors focusing on poverty reduction as a share of the developing country’s GNI. Monitoring this indicator allows stakeholders to gain insights into the effectiveness and impact of international aid efforts on reducing poverty in recipient countries. This enables informed decisions to promote sustainable development and address challenges such as the effectiveness of development assistance in poverty reduction, the allocation and targeting of aid resources, and the impact of aid on recipient countries' GNI.
