DATA CONCEPTS and CLASSIFICATIONS
-
-
Classification used
-
HIV is the virus that weakens the immune system, ultimately leading to AIDS. HIV incidence (sometimes referred to as cumulative incidence) is the number of new cases arising in a given period in a specified population. UNAIDS normally refers to the number of adults aged 15-49 years or children (aged 0–14 years) who have become infected during the past year.
-
Disaggregation
-
is by general population, Age groups (0-14, 15-24, 15-49, 50+ years), sex (male, female, both).
-
Key statistical concepts
-
Special diagnostic tests in surveys or from health facilities can be used to obtain data on HIV incidence. HIV incidence is thus modelled using the Spectrum software.

-
Recommended uses
-
Associated ministries tasked with undertaking this indicator should support funding towards reproductive and sexual healthcare services and education.
-
Limitations
-
Longitudinal data on individuals are the best source of data but are rarely available for large populations.
